Our Origins

Maria Bambina Convent began as a small community in the village of Cuncolim, Goa in 1946 under the name St. Philomena. Every evening the sisters visited the families in the locality and urged by the need of literacy felt challenged to render service to the youth and to humanity at large. In a short time they possessed a simple hall which was converted into class rooms. The English medium classes were conducted in the mornings, while Portuguese medium in the afternoons. Gradually the number increased; innumerable obstacles cropped up and the early years were very tough. Yet, the undaunted courage and the self-sacrificing spirit of the pioneer sisters spurred them with new vigour.

In 1959, the institution was placed under the patronage of Maria Bambina and it came to be known as Maria Bambina Convent High School, catering to both boys and girls. In 1962 Maria Bambina sent its first batch of students for the SSC Examination of the Maharashtra Board. The School got phased out into a Girls High School in 1964 after having agreed to send all its boys to ‘Our Lady of Health School’ which was started by the neighbouring parish.

From then on under the able guidance of Superiors and Principals, the institution surged bringing accolades to our Alma Mater. In June 1993, in response to the signs of times, the sisters were called to meet the greater needs of the adolescent girl students by upgrading the High School to a Higher Secondary School.

This institution is managed by ‘The Sisters of Charity — Goa’ registered society. The congregation of ‘Sisters of Charity’ founded by St. Bartolomea Capitanio in the year 1832 in Italy is now spread to diverse countries and cultures. It considers education of the young especially the most needy as one of its main works of mercy to express the charity of Jesus to humanity. While still a young girl, Bartolomea sensed the irresistible call to Charity. She was a friend and guide to all young girls in her village. She held most dear those among them in greatest need. She opened a school for girls in her own home. She comforted the sick and the bedridden. With Catherina Gerosa her first companion, she opened a hospital. Bartolomea’s vision of charity has culminated in the education of countless young ladies for a life of service all over the world.

This vision has flowered into centres for education and health, homes for unwanted children, for the aged, the disabled, the destitute and all forms of social action. Bartolomea died just eight months after she launched her mission of Charity, yet her vision continues even today The goal of education for us, as it was for our foundress St. Bartolomea is to help the young generation to build up their own lives on sound values bringing about a new civilization of love through a just and humane society.
